Believe it or not, we are living in a very stressful society. As much as you try to maintain a calm lifestyle, anxiety creeps in. Prescribed or over the counter drugs are so common in every household. When I say dealing with anxiety, it does not include a clinical chronic anxiety.
The origin of anxiety
Our ancestors’ life was in danger constantly because of the predators. As they did not have the conditions we have now. However, this fight or flight hormone still runs in our vain. So being anxious or worried is a part of us. Now we know the cause of it. Furthermore, a tiny bit of anxiety is needed to make sure we have shelter, food and first aid etc…
Trauma makes us more pron to anxiety
When a traumatic event happens to us, our brain gets caught up by surprise. It does not know how to respond to the event because it is unknown. So after that it tries to predict that something similar will happen in future too. By doing so, it’s trying to prepare us beforehand. Which results in us being anxious and worried.
Find out if the threat is real or not
Have you gone through something difficult recently? A drastic change in your lifestyle? Going for a new job interview. All these are case scenarios in which it is normal for anyone to feel anxious. But everything is going smooth, and you are still worried it is your brain playing you.
Give a dedicated time to your worries
I know it sounds wired and counterproductive but give it a try. It works for me. I litterly give my self 10 minutes before bedtime to worry and resolve. I write down all of my anxious thoughts. By doing so, I have taken care of my worries instead of putting them at the storage of my mind to pile up. It is what I call anxiety meeting
Conclusion
Anxiety is part of us. Even though we do not realize it. Anxiety is not necessarily bad. A minor level of anxiety is indeed to make sure we do not put ourselves in danger. It is an uncomfortable emotion. Work on yourself to find out the reason behind your worry. Plan out a healthy coping method. Journaling or setting a time apart for your thoughts. Set a timer on your phone for 5 minute before bed to worry, then you are free to rest.
